Euro-MP welcomes Orams Cyprus property judgement

10.16.12am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 7th Sep 2006

London's Liberal Democrat MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford has welcomed the judgement in favour of British couple Mr and Mrs Orams in their fight to keep their holiday home in northern Cyprus.

Baroness Ludford said:

"Property is a complex and understandably emotive issue throughout Cyprus. The respective rights of original and later owners or occupants can only be resolved finally in a political settlement between Cypriots, not through legal action in British courts."

"It is important that the new North Cyprus Property Commission is used to its full potential in settling restitution and compensation claims. The Republic of Cyprus should consider establishing a similar structure without delay."

"It is unhelpful to economic development on the whole island if foreigners cannot feel safe investing their hard-earned cash in property there."
