London Liberal Democrat Euro campaigners descended on Leyton ward this weekend to help local by-election candidate Winnie Smith. Winnie is a local campaigner who is already a community leader and will be an excellent councillor. The by-election was called after the Labour councillor who defeated the LibDems in 2006 was disqualified and fined for illegally telling malicious smears about the Lib Dem candidate.

Euro campaigners were out in force, and determined to get out and about canvassing local residents. London's Lib Dem MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford said:

"It's great to be here in Leyton and help Winnie fight back on behalf of local people against dirty tricks. Local residents are not amused by Labour's dodgy campaigning, the trouble and expense that has caused and the bad publicity it has given Leyton. They will be showing that this sort of behaviour won't wash here."
